A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot a criminal illegal alien gang member during an arrest operation Thursday afternoon in the Bronx, prompting organized protests at the scene.

Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the Dominican national had a previous conviction for grand larceny and multiple arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons charges. He is reportedly a member of the violent Trinitarios gang—the same organization responsible for killing a CBP officer in 2024.

Released by Sanctuary City Policies

Despite his violent criminal history, the NYPD arrested the man on December 23 but released him a few days later under New York City's sanctuary policies. DHS officials stated he was released "by reckless Democrat sanctuary policies that put American lives at risk."

At approximately 4:00 p.m. local time Thursday, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers attempted to arrest the Dominican national during a targeted operation. During the arrest attempt, an ICE officer discharged his weapon, shooting and wounding the illegal alien who is now hospitalized and reportedly alive.

Organized Protests Interfere with Investigation

Shortly after the shooting, organized protesters arrived on the scene to disrupt the investigation and interfere with ICE officers conducting their duties.

"When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments," DHS officials stated. "Our officers should not have to risk their lives, and innocent Americans should not have to face unnecessary danger, because sanctuary politicians refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement."

New York Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani characterized the incident as "unconscionable and incredibly serious," noting that a five-year-old child was riding in the car with the violent convicted gang member. The mayor repeated his call to "Abolish ICE" and offered prayers for the "injured New Yorker."

NYPD officials confirmed the shooting took place in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx and quickly clarified: "The NYPD was not involved in the incident."
